2001 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo

Pocatello, ID

First Go Round Draw

Notes: They draw the second go round (Fri N and Sat Mat performances) Thursday night. We should have it posted by midday Friday along with the results. Editors note: This might not happen, since the editor will likely be gone to Montgomery on Friday...If it gets here by late Thursday night / Friday morning, I'll have time to get it posted.

We try to get the buckiest and most difficult bulls bucked the first two performances so we can bring them back in the semi finals or finals on Saturday Night.  We can’t always do it because they have limited pen space at the arena… and they have to run them off a truck.   Therefore we have to limit the number of contractors out each performance and try to keep the herds together.

First Performance: Wednesday Night

  • Chris Novack               121 Tinker Bell        Western
    • Big bull that was too nice late in the year but bucked good at Tucson.  Bucked off Jim Leatherberry in the long round and Josh O’Byrne was 89 in the finals.   Really good draw.
  • Philip Elkins                777 River Dance            Big Bend
    • The Big Red that looked like a runaway bus with Cody Hancock in the 10th round at the NFR.
  • Thor Hoefer                 CT2  Skeeter               Western
    • Thor has seen this bull so often that they probably car pooled to Pocatello.  Just spins but was marked a 23 20+ bucking off Josh Johnson at Tucson.
  • Jeff Boudreau               76  Dirty Dancer           Western
    • The wild high leaping brindle that wows the crowd.  The judges like him and he likes the field house.   The Russels have stayed home from the winter run and bypassed the big PBR events so their bulls should be plenty fresh.
  • Fred Boettcher             K66  Rapid Fire           Big Bend
    • Former bucking bull of the year and he bucks his rankest here. Doesn’t have room to stay hooked so Fred’ll have to watch when he leaves it. This is the red bull that Philip Elkins rode in the 10th round at the NFR.
  • Vince Stanton               263 Try Some              Western
    • The Mike Corey partnership bull that bucked off Garth Oldfield and Colby Yates at Tucson. Was on the PBR trail last fall. Vince hasn’t bucked off many this year.
  • Blue Stone                    201  Downtown           Western
    • A tricky little creep (the bull) … a handful if he goes away from your hand but do-able into it.
  •  Jim Leatherberry          906 Young Gun            Pinz
    • The guy who was a zillion points on Rapid Fire at Spokane has drawn the by FAR the rankest bull at the NFR his first trip there. Came back and bucked good in the 10th round with Lee Akin.   Think the bull won 2nd/ best bull at the NFR. -  Really cool bull.
  • John Pinnt                     K78  Unforgiven Al Gore         Big Bend
    • This was the best bull at the NFR but the contractors Florida balloted him because Lee Akin got a reride on him because he didn’t nod.   Little guy…. BIG bull that BUCKS.
  • Jason Brumley              K417 After Shock                    Big Bend
    • Should be called after THOUGHT.  A young red that didn’t buck at the NFR because he NEEDS a bullfighter to start him (which they can do at the DNCFR).   A good one if they get him turned back.   Was a 22 both trips at the Cow Palace.
  • Cody Hancock             174  Cowboy Up                     Pinz
    • This bull should’ve gone to the NFR.    Probably the best draw in the pen but he hasn’t had much exposure.
  • John Constantinople      601  El Smacko                        Big Bend
    • Johnny C has a good yellow horned bull.  Thinking Kagan Sirett rode him in a spinner pen at the NFR.  Hancock was 85 on him last year at the DNCFR.   Better bull than just a spinner.

Second Performance:  Thursday Night

  • Judd Paul Leffew          C699  Chili Dog                       Beard
    • Bucked off Chad Bigler and Kagan Sirett at Yakima.  Came from Lloyd Ketchum… he’s young… he’s one of those Moss Brain reds… and he’ll hook the boogers right out of your nose.
  • Cory Check                 381 Bootlegger                         Kesler
    • The black Brahmer cross that bucked so well in Pocatello last year.   A spinner with gas but he flattens out and changes gears.
  • Sye Jones                     007   Gyro                               Beard
    • Ugliest bull in rodeo… a Longhorn  /warf rat cross.  Very difficult to get the whistle on but he didn’t buck at Yakima. Jerked Robey Condra down twice in the 10th round at the NFR.  Not much middle on him –seldom ridden.
  • Felipe Aragon               101 Border Patrol                    Flying 5
    • 2000 Bull of the Year.      The little bull with the biggest heart.  Trick is to get around the corner.   Potter made a great ride on him at last year’s DNCFR and Hancock started off his championship run with a go round win on him at the NFR.
  • Matthew Weber           X10  Midnight Oil                     Beard
    • The Moss Brain secret agents think this is Beard’s best bull.   Got ridden a couple of times late in the year and got to watch the NFR on Direct TV.   Think Vince was 80 on him in the short go at Pendleton.
  • Beau Hill                      666 Shiver N Shake                 Kesler
    • Beau has seen this bull some.  Leatherberry almost rode him at their circuit finals.  A little GOOSEY in the chutes but can be outstanding.   Kagan was in the 90’s on him at Spokane last fall.
  • Rex Malolo                  44   Magic                                Rafter H (Hall)
    • Can be the buckingest bull in Dell’s pen… just not real solid his second trip.
  • Mark Kuhn                  69  Fright Train                         Vold
    • Skinner (Kuhn) might have to bear down or he might have to scrape the bugs off his teeth.  The bull that Harry started hauling full time at Pueblo.  George Gibbs said he was the rankest bull he’d seen in years.  But by the time this youngster got to Kansas City in November—he was worn out.  Someone was in the 70’s on him.
  • Rusty Patrick                XOX   Hollywood Squares       Rafter H (Hall)
    • Bull with a butt bigger than Whoopi’s.  Can be a 22+ or a 19….. nothing in between.   Patrick’s been hot.
  • Will Hines                     77 Yellow Jacket                      Flying 5
    • The great former bucking bull of the year.   Just real good if you get around the corner in good shape.   Think Condra was 94-96 on him at the Cow Palace.
  • Kevin Clanton              66  King Kong                         Rafter H (Hall)
    • Another bucking bull of the year the KONG looks like he might STOP right toward the end.  Into a guy’s hand he’s spur material.  Still… he’s big …. he’s experienced….and he probably isn’t real happy to be in Pocatello.
  • Richard Stapleman        311  Why Not Minot                Vold
    • The toughest bull in rodeo… in the 6 days a year he isn’t at a rodeo—he’s drawing atlas for Rand McNally.   Richard is one of the best bull riders in the PRCA—I don’t see this bull bucking him off.  Might win 1-2 if the guys with ranker bulls buck off.
