2001 MGM Winter Tour Finale

2nd Go Results:

Judges:  Allen Jordon -- Butch Kirby

Jesse Bail    080 Copenhagen Red Dog    Beutler/Gaylord    91 23-22.  $3,916.67.
This great little bull was going to be used in the top 8 semi finals but X-5 Johnnie Rotten of Stace Smith’s came up crippled.  Red Dog looked to be almost TOO GOOD for this pen but Jesse rode him perfectly… stayed down and out over him.  Went into his hand and Bail even spurred a little.

Mike Moore   M2 Copenhagen Warrior   Cervi Bros  84 20-20.  $2,937.50.
The bull riders weren’t thrilled that this bull even got to come here (thought he shoulda had to buy a ticket) and they were right.  Head slinging, double kicking, feet never got 3 inches off the ground.  What a hunk of junk.   If you are an X bull rider who is unlucky enough to be judging, you know the bull is difficult to stay on but not really performing so me… as an unbiased observer I 19’ed the bull and 22’ed the ride but then … heck… Mike was all over him… so I ended up putting a 20 on the bull and 22’ed the ride.  Type of deal that you just figure out how many TOTAL points he should be and then divide by 2.  Looks to me that that’s what these judges did too.

Cody Hancock  CT2  Skeeter   Western  75 18-18.  $1,958.33.
The high horned Braford just farted around in front of chutes—trying to find something to hook. What a DUD.  If he was an 18 then 080 was a 38 (out of a possible 25).  I’da 14’ed the bull.  Ita been a reride option if I was judging even though Cody wouldn’t have accepted it.

Hancock, Bail, and Moore each received $326.39 in ground money (no points)

Josh O’Byrne    H33 Copenhagen Yo Yo.  Little Dan Russel   Reride option.
Just hauled *ss straight down the arena.  Josh took his reride option on H1 Rush of Scotty Lovelace's.   21 22+  5.4.   I just don’t see anyone riding this bull when he goes away from their hands.  Long jumps… drops his shoulder when he turns back.

Some people questioned Josh’s decision because in RETROSPECT he’da made the Semi’s if he’da taken his marking.   People who question that are losers… Josh isn’t.  If you are going to play THIS game you get yourself a set of rules that you go by no matter what circumstances may develop and emotions you get bombarded with and you GO BY THEM.   And you leave it at that regardless of the outcome.  If you want to get philosophical you can apply that logic to religion and how people live their lives.

Come Bouvier   238 Lighting Strike  Western  ? ?  1.4.   1/2 jump.
Looked like a roll and a very rank jump but it was hard to tell anything for sure.  This quite possibly could be the rankest bull here.   Hard to tell.    It may have been the first time Little Dan has flanked him—STRIKE Big Dan’s baby.

They had a big mess-up and had to buck this bull and VC8 of Smith’s after the performance.  Couldn’t get them loaded.  Since VC8’s traveling partner X-5 got crippled when they were tipping him—VC8 just wouldn’t load.  He was upset being by himself.  That’s why I always try to have at least 2 of a specific contractor’s bulls out the same time even if I have to make one the third reride.

I didn’t see it by someone said Lightning Strike was loaded but kicked the latch open and got out… turned back and bucked like heck (rider less) but during the barrel race or car act.  He’s meaner than a rattlesnake with hemorrhoids and he just WASN’T going to be loaded again.   Tough break for an outstanding young bull.

Danell Tipton    VC8  Copenhagen Hurricane   Stace Smith  22 23+  3.9.
Rode him in the slack after.  The sun had set since it takes awhile for the lights to come back up to power after they turn them off to do the spectacular light and smoke show. (Marlboro Man with a flashlight).  This is a really cool bull.  Jumps high and turns back… smooth… 94-96…. what a good bull.   Guess Danell tore his groin last night. They packed him out tonight but I saw him walking down the hall afterwards.  That’s the thing about groins… they can end your career and love life but you can still walk.

Vince Stanton   -73  Spotted Fever  Diamond G
Big spot (duh) that went away from Vince’s hand.  Kept working on him… moving away from him until he welled Stanton.  Not that fast but away from a guy’s hand he’s going to be a problem.

The Gilberts win my award for the best THREE BULLS.   All their bulls bucked hard.  They are in such good physical shape they look like show cattle or like maybe they ran them through a hot wax car wash or something.  And the Gilberts dress like professionals too.  I like to run a few of the other stock contractors through a car wash….. hot wax and deodorant.

Jason McClain   -75  MR. USA   Diamond G  23+ 23-  4.5.
You want to talk about a BUCKY LITTLE SUCKER…. WOW.   Not sure who this bull’s daddy was but he is out of a Ricky daughter.  Heard these people have something like 700 bulls of all ages running around on 7 ranches.  And they are RAISING their own. DNA testing. This little fireplug was outstanding.  Turned back and bucked.  Can’t remember which way he went at this moment but I guess at Rapid City he went the other way and was just a good.   Really impressive.

Slade Malone  G21 Dodge Durango    Rafter G  22+ 23  4.1.
Big boy didn’t impress me quite that much but he still bucked.  Tight circle.  This Malone kid impresses me.  Bull Riders….Jim Gay says to come get on G621 Purgatory and G64  Johnny Rotten.   He’s always shot straight with me.  Every time.

Blue Stone   R410  Copenhagen T Bug - Diamond G   23 23+E  1.8.
Guess this was BUG’s 105th consecutive victory.  Big time DROP.  Jerked Blue down but he’s still has those male model good looks.   Long legged guys probably have a better chance of riding this bull.  Blue’s legs are long but this big RICKY THE QUEER calf is a big bucking sonofagun.

Lee Akin  VT  Helter Skelter   Andrews   23 22+   3.8.
This Braford has some boogaloo moves on his front feet.  Ended up going a way from Lee’s hand but this bull bucks really hard.

Philip Elkins    301 Copenhagen Cash  Growney  21+ 22  3.8.
Tricked Philip… out of a left D and went away from his hand.  Just looked alike a good bull but he’s long and moves forward a little and that make’s him almost impossible if he chooses (and he does CHOOSE) to go away from your hand.

As we all know… Philip has a history of not being the fastest guy in the chutes. At times he’ll take his wrap and then drifts off into a place far far away.  Don’t know exactly where he goes but ELVIS has definitely left the building.  Last night, the production staff suggested that Philip might be in line for a being not ready when called upon fine ($500?).  Said it took him three minutes (and they would know). However, out of nowhere appeared (like WONDER WOMAN) judge Steve Knowles and chute boss Darrell Baron intervened in Elkin’s behalf.   They said that due to not being able to get those two bulls loaded and a communication error (told Philip wrong) by an assistant chute boss—Philip hadn’t known he was next.   It was good to see those guys ante up especially in those costumes.

I think that Philip has tried to hurry but after you been on a couple thousand bulls and have a set routine it’s hard to change.   The first perf  Honeycutt’s bull I’m assuming didn’t like the tight rope and leaned bad and ended up getting a cheap shot.   That last explanation was to get me off the hook with his MOM. It’s possible that she used to put NyQuil on Philip’s pancakes instead of syrup.

For those who are wondering…. 7th place qualifier ROBERT BOWERS is here.  Injured again… he’s out until probably Calgary.   Seems happy though.  Smiles a lot.  Great attitude.  If he’s able to get on twenty more bulls this year he’ll make the NFR easy.  I doubt that he’s been on 20 bulls thus far this season and is 2nd in the world.   Some of the other guys have entered 60-70 rodeos.   That can become a factor in September.
