Bull Notes - Houma PBR
Houma, LA PBR - TPD Event
June 2001

Note: There were three herds here, and I didn't note every single bull. All in all, Nelson's bulls were the best bunch, Harper's were a close second, and Tony Sharp's a distant third.

This was a small pen, and the ground was very sandy and deep -- not the best footing, and some of the bulls showed it.

From the looks of Hwy 90, nutria are no more of a match for the modern automobile than armadillos. I saw at least a hundred flattened nutria rats on the way to Houma. For those of you that don't know, a nutria is a kind of a big swimming rat that looks like a beaver, but smaller and with a skinny rat tail. Guess they don't have enough sense to stay out of the road.

Friday Night June 15th First Perf:

Nelson Bulls Guidry / Nelson

72 Thunder -- Lonnie Steverson
Grey bull just nice. Didn't cover much ground, no tricks, not super speedy, and put on the old blinker before he came around. 79.5

F16 Shuffling...? -- Bowdy Peach
REAL cool - little red motley face muley (or nub horn..) Came around to the right and had a little juice - but was just a good 'un. Bowdy rode him, but I'm not sure on the score. Made it back to the short go.

75 Full Throttle -- Joey Baker
To the left and pretty juicy looking - didn't get to see a lot of him.

T80 Captured -- Ty Cobb
A Hereford looking flat horned bull. Turned back, didn't cover much ground, kind of slow. Looked just good to ride - nothing special.

M2 Outlaw -- Rob Bell
White horned bull that looked like a good one to draw. J/K in his tracks, little less kick than you'd want, but had a little hang time to make him just nice. Got in the air ok, but acted like it was all he could do to get himself off the ground.

B23 Pokey -- Mounted? Sheet was wrong
To the left and move forward a little - just a bull.

K9 Dog Face -- Ronnie Whitfield
A hereford looking red bull. Should be shot right between the eyes. PEE-EWW. Maybe they should re-name him Duck-Drop-Dart & Roll Skoal. Make that extra roll.

WL Rippin (or Rip & Roar) -- Earl Bauer?
Tall black motley faced bull with a brahmerish hump that kind of lunged out of a left D to the let out gate and made like he was going to chase his tail to the right.

761 Money - D.J.Church
Big black Longhorn/mex cross out of a left D, started slow, but once he got wound up... Spin City. Really good one to have, looked like.

B25 Too Much - Kelly Crystal
Black Horned bull - spun to the left pretty honest, but pretty quick. Went out there a couple before he found his spot.

- - (two bars) Rag Doll -- Sheldon Price
Big Charolais that was on his nose and to left -- right in the latch. Probably the coolest bull there. I'm sure the guys who frequent Nelson's deals pray daily that they draw this bull.

Harper Bulls Harper / Auger

These were all first round RR's

G1 Gas Hog -- Clint Green
Showed no mas here - whirled it to the right and dumped Clint. Bull had been showing signs of weakening, but was all gas here. Had a good day.

11 Jigger -- Layne McCasland
Bull stumbled in a soft spot right out of there and came out of it straight, but bucking hard. Not his best trip to get him rode.

H8 Try Me -- ?
Gets an A+ (on the curve) -- Around to the left and bucked. Good day for this white horned bull.

112 Becacah -- ?
Huge bull, and knows how to throw his weight around. He didn't keep hammering away, gave a couple of hop-skips to let the guy catch up, but he did buck. Lot's of up and DOWN - Eliminator type. REAL heavy looking.

Short Go -- Harper

22 Super Freak -- Lonnie Steverson
Haven't seen this bull too often. Looks like Vince Stanton was 80 on him in the Lufkin Finals. He sure was neat-o here. Leaped and spun to the left. Bucked like A23 Nitro on a nice day. Easily the best draw in this short round. 86.5 pts.

40 Exodus -- Ty Cobb
40 lunged out of there, and did a little run and turnback-screw the bull rider move. Hard to ride, but not too pretty. Yuck.

490 Smart Aleck -- Casey Sweat
Casey Sweat is a cowboy. Had a good little Tony Sharp bull (8 Sidewind) in the first round and gave him a thrashing. They load him up in the short go and hold him till last, and his bull (61 Crawfish - Tony Sharp) runs off, but Casey gives him a spur bath anyway. He gets a RR option on 490, and he crawls on right then - back to back... and gets welled at about 5 sec.. Not a happy ending, but the kid's got the right stuff. 490 had the best trip I've seen him have in a long while - in the latch to the left and got it on. Not much moving forward.

Short Go -- Nelson

J3 El Nino -- Cody Whitney
El Nino needs to make up his mind to spin to the left and stick with it. Came around here and then jumped out of it - back and forth a couple of jumps, and back around left to finish up strong. A piggy little spark plug of a black muley, he looks NFR quality if he would stay hooked. I saw this bull run off with Danell at Pasadena last year, he sure looked a lot better here. 86 pts

61 Lyon's King -- Bowdy Peach
Little red Brahmerish bull - looks like a balloon you let the air out of. Fires out of there, and is pretty fast and has lots of action, but just does NOT kick. This bull, 66 Blood Sport, and 40 Exodus were the three fine examples of the luck of the draw... BAD luck.

60 Vicademas -- Don Hunter
Impressive little paint bull. Kind of small, but he gives it 100%. No tricks, just one-two-three and around to the left, get there if you can. If a guy could draw something like this everywhere he went, I don't know what he'd have to complain about.

66 Blood Sport -- Jody Newberry
On the other hand, if a fellow drew something like this everywhere he went, I don't guess you could blame him for quitting and taking up golf or something. Don't know if this bull does this every time, but here he was pure run & duck junk. Don't guess he would get rode very often if this was his usual trip. Skeeted out of there, ducked around and skeeted back toward the chutes... in the process, he skeeted out from under Jody. It's hard to describe how crappy this bull looked from a bull rider's perspective.

F7 Freak on a Leash -- Ron Jon Thoeming
Cool name - ugly bull. Turned back and whirled it to the left right in the latch. If you had a whole herd of bulls that looked like this, you might have a hard time telling them apart. Lots of black and white spots. Bull really looks like a shaggy, pointy-headed plummer milk cow. Good name.

Tony Sharp Bulls

This is the guy out of Alabama or Mississippi that subs bulls to a lot of bull ridings. These bulls don't do any PRCA rodeos, but you might run across them somewhere. At this particular deal, this was NOT the pen to draw into.

621 Time Out
DUD - ran off down the front of the chutes.

66 Stinger
DUD - Ran off down the front of the chutes and almost stopped - RR option.

7 Sox
DUD - ran off down the front of the chutes - RR option

8 Sidewind
Pretty neat little crooked horned brindle. Could have had some more kick. Took a spurring from Mr. Sweat.

9 Hooper
Didn't get to see much. Either he was going to turn back strong to the left, or run off down the front of the chutes...

131 Whistler
A good brindle. Turned back to the left - good one to have.

5 Chisolm
Good brindle - spun -

61 Crawfish (short go)
DUD - ran off down the front of the chutes. RR option.

262 Bouncer (short go)
REALLY bucked. Right out of there and around to the left. Good bull.

W7 Tiny Tim (short go)
Just a bull - J/K - Lumbered around. Maybe too much brahmer.
