Bull Notes - Jackson, MS
Dixie National Livestock Show & Rodeo
February 2001

Jackson Sheets

Herd: Harper/Morgan/Auger or Harper/Auger or Auger/Harper or Auger or something like that.

Note: To add to the name game confusion, James Harper, Ralph Morgan AND Kenneth Auger were at this rodeo. But it looks like it's Kenneth Auger's show these days. Rodeo could do worse than have an Auger involved... the Augers and their extended family have poured money and support into every pro rodeo in my part of the country since before I was born. Kenneth's father, J.A. Auger, is one of the most well respected men in North Louisiana, and a pillar of his community.

Jackson is where this outfit earns their pay. Nine or ten perfs in about six days, then they tear down, haul to Baton Rouge and set up again in 24 hours time. They used to call it Harper & Morgan hell night. The last few years, Jackson has been loaded with bull talent. Not so this year, but the bulls looked a lot better than the two perfs I saw at Lafayette, and that's a good sign. But so far, I've seen three perfs of them and only one NFR quality trip, and it was a "maybe".

(Sunday 3PM Matinee)

Bulls:

49 Stone Hinge (maybe they meant to say "Stonehenge"?)
Burly looking black white face muley. Turned back both ways and looked like a pretty good one. Started to the left not so strong, but caught a gear when he reversed it. ........Left hand delivery.

23 Gator Bait
This was a average size banana horned brindle. Out of a right hand delivery he went to the let out gate and turned back to the left and spun. Kind of slow to place on though. .....left

8 Papa Roach
Big brahmer lookin' black bull with horns. Loped about halfway down the arena and turned back brahmer style - plenty of rear and not enough kick. Looked lazy... just like a brahmer. Likes to shake his horns at the bull fighters. Jake Baker was 73 on him. .....right

41 Bandelero
A pretty swift red muley. Bucked a lot like G1, but with less authority. Around to the left and sent his guy end over end out the back door. Looked like he was gonna stay hooked. ........left

4W Firecracker
If this bull would have bucked in a straight line, he would have been on I-55 before the whistle blew. As it was, he made a big circle. Long jumps, couple of lead changes... not enough to faze Felipe, who never looked out of control. 72 points. .......right

129 Prime Time Skoal
Prime Time turned back to the left, but it doesn't usually matter with him. It's what he does before he turns back that gets you. Same leaps and rolls, but he's not the bull he used to be. ......right

145 Droopy
A jersey eyed red muley that was pretty average here. Back and forth, looked to have plenty of kick, but wouldn't stay hooked. ............right

H6 Whammy
This is a black, white faced, cow horned bull. Looked a lot gassier here than in Lafayette. Went both ways - to the left first. He was mounted out...........left

71 Bucket Head
This was not the same 71 Bucket Head that was at Lafayette. One place or the other he must have been a different bull. This Bucket Head was a little red muley that turned back to the right bucking hard, fell down, and got his guy a RR. The Bucket Head at Lafayette was a white w/black spots horned bull that ran off like a bad woman and got his guy a RR. See a pattern developing? ............left

103 Swamp Rat
This is the same old red muley you know. Looks like he has even less desire to kick over his head these days. I have to say I was pretty impressed with Chad Castillo. If he rides like he did here all year, he's NFR bound. This bull did a couple of hi-ho silvers that would have got a lot of guys. Reared up on his back feet and spun... how are you supposed to get by that without a bronc saddle? Ask Chad. Not that the bull was real bucky... but it was the most exciting 72 points I've ever seen. He must have got zero difficulty points. If this bull had any drop, he would be double dog rank. ...........right

2102 No Doubt
Last year, this big black muley was lost in the crowd. Without the A-teamers around, he's one of the better bulls to have. Has a really mean corner, but if you get by it he's pretty good. Had a REALLY mean corner here... to the left right in the gate. .............left

001 Crown Royal (?)
A brindle muley that went about one and to the left. Looked pretty good to ride here. ........left

P1 Rafter (See Baton Rouge Notes)
A horned version of 001, but not quite as bucky. ...........left

Slade Long
