Bull Notes - Montgomery, AL
Southeastern Livestock Exposition - Winter Tour Rodeo
March 2001

Perf 3 Friday night and Perf 4 Saturday matinee <<>> Finals <<>> Sheets

Herd: Auger - Harper <<>> Silver Spurs <<>> Stace Smith

<> The Good: The Hospitality - VIP room catered by Riscky's... excellent. Plus... Pat the Dodge rep had a first class Sauce Piquante cooking on the hill. Rudy Burns might've had something to do with that.

<> The Bad: The Ground - shifty and spongy... all over the arena. Must've been wet when they put it in.

<> The Ugly: Alabamans can apparently line dance to anything...

<> The Scary: L51 Cold Cold Heart of Silver Spurs. Pure Evil

Perf 3 Friday Night--------------------

Harper Morgan & Auger Bulls (picture)

Bulls - Jockeys (delivery)

29 Orange Crush - Randall Hinote (L)
Randall didn't last too long. Think he dislocated his elbow on the turnback. Bull had his usual trip - right in the latch to the left. Don't know if he would have kept it up on the bad ground.

103 Swamp Rat - J.D. Hoagland (R)
Fouled J.D. on the gate. I noticed the next day that they had put a 21 down for a mark... Might've been because we only got to see him for 21 one-hundreths of a second.

-1 Showtime - J.D. Hoagland (R) (RR)
This bull was pretty good here. On his nose, turned back... He has been known to cut out, but he threw J.D before anything like that happened.

98 Bubba - Brian Curtis (L)
I was bragging on this bull after Monroe, but he never found his spot here. Could've been the ground, but who knows? Brian made it back to the short go on him with 75, but he was just a bull.

45 Slam Jam - Josh Carter.(L)
Big brindle bull turned back in the gate (I think) to the left. Stayed hooked and was just good. Josh was 77 and made it back.

74 Challenger - Brandon Strelczyk (L)
This bull was REALLY good here. Left there high, hard, and around to the left right in the gate. Brandon didn't take him far.. got his heels clicked. Bull really bucked. Was supposed to come back for the short go, but came up cripped at the last minute.

-5 Timber - Slade Malone (L)
Big old long black bull was dragging his butt around to the left. Got Slade back off his rope and darted him. Hated to see it happen to a guy named Slade. This dude has to be destined for greatness.

303 Jitterbug - Sheldon Isom (L)
They must've named him after they watched him buck. He's a little spotted bull. Bucked like a jitterin' bug. Yuck-o

2102 No Doubt - Jim Buckner (L)
Turned back right there to the left. Didn't get to see much of him -- he hipped himself and shook Jim loose pretty quick. Looked like he was going to whirl.

177 Good as Gold - Jesse Bail (R)
Big dirty white bull with flat horns. He bucked pretty good -- stayed close to the let out gate... back and forth. Had some kick, just never would spin. Couldn't do anything else to shake Jesse either. He was 77 and made it back.

196 Batman - Tyler Fowler (R)
Batman is a black muley that spun both ways here. One of the best bulls out in this perf -- he got Tyler close to the whistle. Stepped on his leg a little, but nothing serious.

8 Papa Roach - Jay Henderson (R)
Big horned lumbering brahmer looking hunk-o-junk that wallered Jay off. Not enough kick.

76 Stone Cold - Jason Fordham (?)
I missed seeing this bull, but he was only 64 on him. Must not have been too much.

08 Candy Man - Donnie Woodham (R)
Candy Man fired here. Good trip for just a good little red bull. Bucked his man off.

532 Raspberry Wine - Scott Breding (R)
I thought Scott had this bull knocked, but he got unsaddled right near the whistle. Bull did the same old thing -- no kick, plenty of buck. Had a good looking ride going, and no doubt would have made it back.

Perf 4 Saturday Matinee--------------------

Harper/Auger Bulls

19 Top Gun - Josh Johnson (R)
Big heavy brindle that is sometimes a hunk of junk turned back and looked strong here. Was enough bull to get back to the short go on, but he got Josh at about 5.

A23 Nitro - Zack Brown (L)
A23 looks pretty poor, but still bucked here. He puts a lot of effort into bucking -- gives it everything he's got. On a good day he's a lot like Terry Williams' Red Wolf in that he looks like he's trying to jump out of his skin every jump -- lots of action -- but ends up getting rode more than other rank bulls. A23 just doesn't have as much weight to throw around, and it's not likely he'll last the way Red Wolf has. Still a great bull that any bull rider would hope to have every time -- especially in this herd. He does exactly what you want a bull to do, and does it well enough to dart you if you stub your toe. Zack was 83 and won the long go.

J783 Red Baron - Josh O'Byrne (R)
Red bull that was pretty sorry 2 weeks ago was better here, but still not enough kick. Was good enough for Josh to get back on.

H6 Whammy - Mike Moore (R)
They switched Whammy to a right delivery, and he pretty much did the same thing... went both ways. he got Mike after he reversed it away from his hand. Mike was giving him a thumping, but he was just a tad behind. Good bull.

236 Sling Shot - James Morgan (R)
Veteran bull had a great day here. Would have worked in the short go, but can't buck them twice in the same day.

Silver Spurs Bulls

Note: I don't know what they feed these bulls, but their diet must include gunpowder and roofing tacks. Some of them are MEAN. They must be happy to see some real dirt instead of knee deep sand, because even though the ground was spongy, most of them really bucked good. If they went to a lot of indoor rodeos, the Spurs guys would have to invest in some heavier panels. These suckers are probably hell on a portable pen.

L72 Mr. Pootie - Chad Mayfield (L)
A little black muley with a couple of white spots on his face -- Mr Pootie looks just like a healthy milk cow. Out of a left delivery (all they have in Florida...) he was around the end of the gate to the right and bucked. Would have been nice to have him available for the short go, but who knew?

L64 Baby Jake - Lee Akin (L)
What a mean bull... The ends of his horns were all splintered up from hooking various inanimate objects. He even hooked the other bulls in the pen with him. Fought the chute, layed down, tried to do a front flip while Lee was taking his wrap. Once he got in the arena, he spun to the right and was just nice. Bull fighters have to stay away from him because if he sees anything, he tears out after it. Lee was 80 to split 2/3 in the long go, but after the whistle was unable to outrun the little spotted sucker, and got plowed under. Should've zig-zagged.

L71 Cool Breeze - Shane Drury (L)
This was a harmless looking little black muley that really had some action. Shane took him what seemed like about 3-4 seconds, and the little bull didn't go far past the end of the gate. Lots of up and down and had some roll to go with it. Rolled Shane into his hand and he couldn't get back.

L73 Hell Roaring - Chad Klein (L)
Little bitty black & white paint bull. He had an attitude in the box, and was just a spinning dude once he got out of there. Would be pretty good to ride if he was bigger... he unseated Chad here. Not really Chad's fault -- the bull didn't have much to sit on. Three inches either way... you're off. Jason McClain was 78 and made it back on this bull the first time he was out. Only bull ridden on Thursday night. BIG Day money

139 Skip-A-Long - Jason Kennemore (L)
Skipped-a-long off down the pen. Rolled a lot while he was at it.

B5 Jumpin Joe - Nick Low (L)
Looked like a giant muley yak. Rolled a lot, went straight.... YUCK-O

L66 Amy's Pet - Jeff Nisen (L)
Real UGLY bull. Bucked like a blue heeler chasing his tail.

Slade Long
