Bull Notes - Montgomery, AL
Southeastern Livestock Exposition - Winter Tour Rodeo
March 2001

Final Round <<>> Perf 3 Friday night and Perf 4 Saturday matinee <<>> Sheets

Herd: Auger - Harper <<>> Silver Spurs <<>> Stace Smith

Notes: Should be good watching on TV. Bull Riders stepped up and rode 6 out of the 12 - including some that hardly ever get ridden. Big surprise in this pen was two Silver Spurs bulls -- L51 and K9. Both outstanding. Best bull in the bunch was probably VC8 Copenhagen Hurricane of Stace Smith's.

They switched deliveries on some bulls, since most of the bulls out in this round are usually left delivery.

This perf will be broadcast on TNN as follows:
Sunday ---- May 13 @ 9:00 PM Eastern
Monday --- May 14 @ 11:00 PM Eastern
Friday ----- May 18 @ 9:00 PM Eastern

  • Qualified Rides:
    • Lee Akin -------------- 73 (HMA) ------ 86
    • Jason McClain ------ 11 (HMA) ------ 83
    • Jesse Bail ------------ 166 (HMA) -----82
    • Greg Potter ----------- G1 (HMA) ---- 81

Perf 3 Saturday Night Finals
(Wrangler Tour Round)-

Bulls - Jockeys (delivery)

73 Rampage II (HMA) - Lee Akin (L)
Big black had his day and Lee just had a better one. Lee stuck it all over Auger's big dog, and never looked out of shape. He might've been a few more than 86, but he was one of the first guys out in the final round and with a lot of good ones left to buck, they weren't slinging points. Lee's really elevated his game. Great guy.

191 Gunpowder (HMA) - Josh O'Byrne (L)
This was a new black bull that's supposed to really buck, and he did for about 2 seconds, and when Josh was still there, he sold out and skittered off like a crazed squirrel. Yuck-O. Josh worked hard here, and sure didn't benefit from the luck of the draw in either round. Rode two hard to ride suckers.

11 Jigger (HMA) - Jason McClain (R)
Little red bull can have a bad day now and then, but he sure had a good one here. Turned back and stayed hooked. Pretty catty. Jason was 83 and won 2nd in this round. They switched deliveries -- he's usually a left D. Too many lefts in the final round pen.

490 Smart Aleck (HMA) - Josh Carter (R)
Would have liked to have had L72 Mr Pootie of Spurs in the finals rather than this bull. They did a delivery switch on him too. He turned back and spun, but wasn't as good as I've seen him before. A little tricky looking, but not spectacular. Threw Josh off.

G1 Gas Hog (HMA) - Greg Potter (R)
Potter made a pretty impressive ride... don't know how he stayed off the Hog's head. Bull would make a couple of rounds and then try a chili whop move and reverse it. I think he did that about three times, and I'm sure it wasn't easy to get by for 81 pts.

166 Strawberry Wine (HMA) - Jesse Bail (L)
Bull had his normal trip -- which is to say he looked like a balloon you let the air out of. Jesse, being a no nonsense kind of guy, just rode him anyway. Jesse had drawn 74 Challenger, but he came up cripped, and he ended up with Strawberry. Lots of difficulty difference there. Jesse picked up 3rd in the round with 82...placed in the average...won the bronc riding... busy guy.

420 Gusto (HMA) - Jake Baker (R)
Black horned bull -- usually a left delivery. The old delivery switch didn't hurt him much... he bucked good. Got Jake on the ground.

231 Mad Max (Smith's) - Brian Curtis (R)
I couldn't see what this one did. I know he bucked Brian off, and looked like he got walked on a bit. Don't know what happened.

VC8 Copenhagen Hurricane (Smith's) - Michael Riggs Jr (L)
I haven't seen this bull in person very often. Boy he was one bucking dude here. No tricks -- he just FIRED.

L51 Cold Cold Heart (Silver Spurs) - Lamar Duren (L)
Cold heart maybe, but hot blooded for sure. They had this bull penned right by the walk in door at the back of the coliseum, and it's just fortunate he didn't eat any small children that ventured too close to the fence. Looks a lot like G21 Durango of Neal Gay's, but is younger and has a lot more pent up anger and hatred for humans. Might be G21's evil twin. They didn't load him in the bucking chute as much as they captured him. Like catching a rabid moose in a box trap. Layed and sulled in the box, and bellered the whole time... hard to get out on. Lamar took him squatting, and holy smokes did he leave there. Leaped and dropped... Big time E. If he keeps that up for 8 seconds, he oughta have some medals pinned on him. Big brindle nightmare of a bull.

K9 Copenhagen K-Nine (Silver Spurs) - Wayne White (L)
A big healthy hard-bodied black muley that apparently LOVES to spin. Pretty quick out there about two or three and got it on -- lickety split and bucking. Nervous in the box... good bull. If he bucks like that every time, he's ready for the big show.

L6 Helicopter (Silver Spurs) - Zack Brown (L)
A textbook looking brindle with horns. Bill Harper flanked him... Spurs flank man must've been on the far side or something. Bull went about 3-4 seconds before he found his spot, but when he did, he drilled a hole in the ground. Zack was 79, but he was in the well a good bit of the ride... he wasn't willing to quit. Probably got his ride docked a little. Looked like a good bull to draw... he was calmer acting than some of the other Spurs bulls, but he sure didn't mind mucking Zack out after the whistle... Pure meanness. Great effort on Zack's part got him 2nd in the average.
