| Dallas... Perfs 1 & 2 |
| A great prison rodeo. |
| If you are a contestant at one of these deals you are basically a prison
inmate. Lots of rules... lots of petty fines... no appeal.... NFR type
environment. On the other hand from a production standpoint they get alot
done in a short period of time. Attendance has been really good. First rate concert acts follow the rodeo, and it's really a good rodeo by itself. Probably better than the NFR. Bareback horses have been outstanding. Judges are marking high.Timed events are always good at these deals. Bulls: Pens have been pretty uneven. They don't have enough pen space in the building so you have to buck each contractor's bulls all together. That hasn't worked out too well. I haven't seen many NFR sure deals here thus far. A few bulls on the first 85 list won't be on the next one, including a few we saw on the PBR telecast (until they yanked the feed to our locker room TV). We didn't get to watch very much of it. Looked to me like Jerome Davis is a natural commentator. Thought Ty did a good job on their network telecast. There have been some "23 pointers" here that were pretty much duck spinners. Best bull I've seen so far was 731 of Andrews followed by G7 of Mesquites. Casey Baize broke some ribs last night. We drew him bulls for the next two perfs but I can't imagine him getting on. He has to DR by 9 AM and when you're in the extra room at Midnight that's a pretty short turn around time. Was riding really good... probably cost him making the NFR. Tough deal. Don't want you to think from the previous statements that this rodeo isn't a great deal for cowboys and contractors. Shoot... it's great. Nice rooms, everyone together, lots of families here resting after a hard year. It's the behind closed doors power B.S. that burns my butt. There are good reasons why players in other sports are unionized and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to attorneys. The bull riders alone could make a mediocre lawyer wealthy. Do I think they pick on the bull riders at these deals (and NFR)? -you bet I do. Pick... pick... pick.... look .... look... look.... just pure B.S. Judges: Allen Jordon and Steve Knowles. Tom Peterson and Jade Robinson on the back. Couldn't let Jade judge with Allen... it's a small arena and they'd take up too much space. Like having three barrels in the arena--it would turn back too many bulls. In their new knit pull over judging sweaters the judges look like gay rugby players. Fat gay rugby players. Perf 1: Can't seem to find Knowles sheet. Might've tossed it... he's higher than the Goodyear blimp (and nearly as big). Chavez... G50 Speck So Mesquite.... Allen 22'ed him in 2.09 seconds. I'da had to put a question mark--jerked him down but shouldn't have. Casey Baize... 112 Little Johnny... Lovelace. Allen 19'ed him in 6.21... jumped and kicked down the front of the chutes. Kyle Joslin.... 56 Diamond Shadow... 88 Allen 21'ed him. Duck Spinner. He looked really small... like Larry Davis in a room full of bull doggers. This guy rides good. Jason McClain... 027 Swamper...Beutler... 86... Allen 21'ed him... he was a 20. Duck Spinner. Myron Duarte... on 803 Rhett Pet Dip. 83. Allen 20'ed him... he was a 19. Blaine Whipp... G7 Spectacular Mesquite. Allen 23+'ed him in 5.65. Pretty bucky. Lots of drop and kick. Philip Elkins... 791 Captain Chaos... Mesquite... Allen 22'ed him in 4.93. Red Paint to the left back to the right and Philip pulled the rip cord. Looked like a good bull. Zack Brown -62 Lovelace. Small black bull with good set of horns. Allen 21+'ed him in 2.59. Hard to tell what this bull really is... more of a tight circle and was walking in it. BJ Shumacher... 514 of Beutlers... Allen 22'ed him in 6.68. Looked like a ground squirrel on crack. Was bucking hard but couldn't decide when to turn back. Probably an NFr bull based on what he did all season but hard to figure out what pen to put him in. Hard to find 14 other squirrels on crack unless you dip into the Team Roping ranks. Beau Hill... 001 Knothead... Smith. BWF bucked good. 87. Allen 22'ed him but he was a 21. Don't know that he'll make the NFR list. Hope Beau does. Blue Stone... 8 Booger Red Smith.... fatso red muley...... went to the left into his hand. 89. Allen 22'ed him--he was probably a 21+. Might make the NFR list. Jesse Bail... 704 Fandango Lovelace. 87... Allen 20'ed him. To the left into his hand. Duck. |

| Dallas Perf 2 |
| Howdy from cellblock A |
| This was supposed to be the rank pen. The judging system is trying having the judges only record sub totals... no ride or animal markings. That's comparable to furnishing ski masks and 9MM's to hoodlums and dropping them off at the 7-11. So the judges used half points to better represent their bull riding scores so the guys could use these markings as a point of reference in the future. The answer to the judging problems is to hire better judges. Hire guys to judges each event. These two usually are top notch bull judges. Tonight Knowles must've ate his ice cream too fast -- froze his brain. Either that or they finally got the rule passed that judges have to have lobotomies. Johnny Chavez on 31 Dippin Joe of Battles. BWF... Left... then went a couple and back to the right. Kind of an end swapper. Allen 22 ed him... Steve 21+ in 5.7. Looked like a 21 to me. Casey Baize. CT Baby Cowtown. Salt River Jer'. 88 23-21.5. Went to the right into his hand. I wasn't that impressed with him. Casey got off away from his hand and got stepped on. Ribs. Philip Elkins on 777 Body Works... Andrews. 90 22-22. Left away from his hand. Philip stayed down and made a good ride. Can you be 90 on a bull and he not be on the NFR list? Yep. Blaine Whipp 7 Crossfire of Baileys... 0 ?YUK 23+E. Big fat hunk of junk with one roll. 23+???? 3+ would be closer. 23+???? Geez. Knowles must've been on too many rides at Disney World. Brain is scrambled. Zack Brown... Dippin Ice Man... J-J. 19-20 3.1. Head up... no kick.. away from his hand. 3 Tight Wire Salt River Jer. 70 14-18. RR option declined. This was a great young bull with Baize at Waco. Backed out.. hipped himself so hard it stopped him... I thought he broke a leg but he didn't. I think this is a good bull that had a bad break. Fortunately it wasn't his leg. Which brings us to a discussion topic. The night we drew the first pen here... people of authority got on the phone and told me that I only had 3 right hand delivery bulls and I had to have 4. My response was that according to THEIR master list--there were only 9 out of the 48 bulls that had right d's. With 4 perfs, that's 2 per perf. DUH. They said they'd just change a delivery on a bull. I said I thought they had to have the owners and the event reps's okay--they said no, the Ranch Foreman and Rodeo Warden can do it. So I said I wouldn't if I were them. Might cost a bull going to the NFR... might cost a guy from going to the NFR. Might get someone or a bull hurt. So they allowed they'd just stick another Right D bull in there even though I said it didn't fit the pen. At one point the conversation got pretty ignorant. Ignorant is an appropriate word. When production folks go to screwing with competitive opportunity and risk getting a cowboy or bull hurt... that for sure IS ignorant. In the end they didn't change anything. Of course I had no credientials when I got here and the bull riders are getting picked on but then--what's new. I can relate to Cool Hand Luke. What we have here is a failure to communicate. Myron Duarte on 10 Freckles... Salt River Jer.... 0 24 24? 1.6. Myron cowboy'd up and got out of there. This is a famous bull... but my impression was that if Myron would've got around the corner he was going to take off. Might be right--might be wrong. Beau Hill VC8 Hurricane of Smiths. 93 22.5 23.5. 22.5 was about right. I figured Beau would get along with this bull. Into his hand. Good bull ride. Whistles seem long here. Jason McClain.... 76 Law Dog... Andrews.... 22.5 23+ 5.12 Right back to the left. Only one round... Jason kicked loose and the Dog jumped forward and turned back way from his hand. Jesse Bail 731 Bo Dippin Andrews. 24 22+ 2.2. Away from his hand to the right. Rankest bull out so far. For Knowles to 22 this bull and 23+ 7 of Bailey's leads me to believe that those tight judging sweaters must cut off circulation to their brains... or at least to their vacant cranial cavities. If this bull is a 22 then 7 is a 2. Kyle Joslin 113 Direct Deposit Snuf J-J. 18 19+ 4.25. Went 3-4 jumps and away from his hand. An 18. Supposed to be a really bucky bull. Wasn't. |

| Dallas Perf 3 |
| The Smokin' Milk Duds - Featuring some of the "Soon to be Erased from the First 85 head List" Players |
Roll these suckers in chocolate and put them in a box and you'd have
a fine movie snack. Blaine Whipp K9 Silver Spurs. 0 19- 23 2.78. Big black muley turned
back to the right but looked sluggish... real slow. Knowles 23ing this
bull must have something to do with where he lives. Florida. This bull
is supposed to be outstanding. This Whipp is a great guy. People just
love him here. Myron Duarte 844 Rambler Kesler. 94 23-23. Legitimate score. This young
yellow bull really bucked. To the right into Myron's hand... had major
ground problems in the middle then got it again. And he's mean too.
Outstanding bull ride. If you are contemplating having a noon on Saturday perf in college
football country--don't do it. And sure don't figure on Vince Gill to
pick up the slack. Bet this will be a four perfer next year. Maybe they'll
just book the Ice Capades. |

| Fourth Performance |
| Saturday Night on Cell block A |
Not sure if all the people were here to see the rodeo or Lyle Lovett's
hair. Had a better bull riding tonight. Can't find my bull notes so
I'm winging it a day after it happened. Jason McClain 3241 Joe Banana Cervi. 86 22-21. As I recall this black
bull with nubs turned back into Jason's hand and stayed and, in doing
so, locked up an NFR berth for McClain. An NFR good enough bull (200
of them out there), but a borderline pick if he goes. Bull bucked good
here though. Casey Baize T7 Psycho Three Hills. Casey is out with a collapsed lung.
Ended up getting released on Sunday after they pulled the tube. Just
saw him in the coffee shop at the hotel. Was riding really good. 2003
should be a big year for this guy--one of the best rider / persons we
have--he's a credit to the sport of professional bull riding. |

| Fifth Performance |
| Semi Final Round (8) |
Full house and things were rockin. This is were the production people
really shine. They put on the entire performance in 2 hours an 10 minutes.
While I get crosswise with them on a daily basis it's hard to fault
the product they present to the paying customer. Jason Mcclain G50 Speck So Mesquite. Has a drop right out of there that jerked Jason and Chavez down. Supposed to be just a good spinner if you get by that. They are going to buck him on a right delivery from now on to see if they can get rid of the drop. Stepped on Jason. He's limping but he won enough here to make the NFR and for most of the year Jason was fighting an up hill battle. Myron Duarte 777 Body Works Andrews. 22 22+ 5.71. Watusi cross went away from Myron's hand and just kept working on him until he got him. Myron said he nearly rolled his hand out of the rope when he turned back and it got him a little behind. This bull is good enough to go--it just depends how the guys get their pens set up. Blue Stone 731 Bo Dippin Andrews. 94 23-23. Good bull ride--into Blue's hand and nearly bucked him off at the end. I'd imagine that based on two trips here--this bull won the $10,000 best bull award here again this year. I thought the second best bull was 844 Rambler of Keslers. They didn't want to buck their bulls a second time because of the long haul to the Canadian Finals and it may have cost 840 and 951 an NFR berth since their first trips here weren't their best. The NFR list will be finalized before the Canadian Finals take place. Beau Hill G7 Spectacular Mesquite. 90 22 21.5. Bo had to ride this bull to make the NFR and he did. Bull had lots of drop and up and down to him but Bo made a perfect ride. It is great to see this kid make the NFR. I saw him several times this year ride hard to ride bulls that few guys could get by--and not win what he should have. And then he got hosed for the $50,000 at Calgary. But he toughed it out, never whined, never felt sorry for himself. Seeing him make the NFR--made my year. Philip Elkins 791 Captain Chaos Mesquite. 85 22-22. Philip also had to ride this bull to make the NFR and this bull bucked him off here the other night. Not exactly the Energizer bunny in the chute, Elkins got his motor running when they opened the gate before he nodded. The bull had him hung up away from his hand but being a veteran and knowing the NFR was on the line, he ran his knee up and hung on. Here's another guy who had a tough year. His shoulders are shot and I didn't think he was well enough to make it. Been out off and on all season. Paying entry fees--waiting to get better--getting on--getting hurt again. Glad it worked out for Mrs Elkin's baby boy.

| Dallas Recap |
This is a great rodeo for the contestants. They can bring their families and really enjoy themselves. More fun than the NFR--better atmosphere. Stayed close by in a four star hotel--all together--like it should be. The Semi Final and Final go rounds -- the last performance -- makes
the thing rock. 15 contestants are too many at the NFR. It puts too
much time pressure on the production and screws up the judging. It takes
away any possibility of FUN. The production team do a great job considering
all they have to do. It is no fun for them either. 10 go rounds are
too many in every NFR event. Too many for a lot of different reasons.
In the riding events--guys get sore and performance goes down... stock
is on feed too long.... timed event horses get sour... you lose dramatic
impact.... lots of stuff. The contestants have no time to do anything
but get ready for the next perf. No time for family. But the money is
good for the contestants and stock contractors and Las Vegas makes millions
and millions. Somewhere between 25 and 75 depending upon who's figures
you believe. Someone told me that even Las Vegas Events (our partner--nets
a million or so)--but the PRCA has to hump to break even due to a lousy
contract that no one has the balls or fair play enough to redo. I think
all that died with Bennie Binion. Great friend of rodeo. I KNOW things
would be different--BETTER--if he were still alive. |
