Bull Notes: Beaumont, TX
YMBL Championship Rodeo

Sat - May 4, 2002

Herd: BEUTLER & SON

All in all, this looked like a pen of good ones. Hardly a dud in the bunch - and plenty of spinners.

The Beaumont Sheets

The Bulls

510 Nasty Norman -- Ben Cook -- L
All-brindle horned bull that spun to the left pretty flat. I see where Lonnie Carpenter was 89 on this bull at Lubbock, and Vince Stanton was 74 on him at Tucson. I'm guessing Ben would have been in the 70's here, based on the other rides that got a score, but then - I'm not a judge.

420 Headache -- D. Robertson -- L
White w/ black spots that spun to the left just nice.

509 -- Curt Check -- L
Down horned bull - white w/ brown spots. Spun to the right.... nice

2 Flattop -- Joaquin Garza -- R
Brindle bull with 1 1/2 horns. He came around fast & flat to the left and about 6 he skeeted forward and came back to the left. 77 pts.

799 -- Mike Moore -- R
Small nub-horned bull - white w/ brown & black spots. Out about 3 and drilled a hole in the ground to the right. Looked like he got Mike's rope about 5, and Mike rode him the rest of the way with just the tail. 70 pts.

519 -- Peter Randle -- L
Black & white flat horned bull - out a couple and around to the left kind of dragging his butt.

-15 Stick Marsh -- Brian Wise -- L
Phantom-looking horned bull that would probably be a bucker if he would pick a spot and spin. Here, he went back and forth - hard to ride... YUCK. Plenty of KICK.

622 -- Bryan Mann -- L
Black white-faced bull with down horns. Don't know what he would've done... about the second jump he kicked so high he almost went end-over-end, stumbled, and then ran off. Bryan got a RR option.

518 Typhoon -- Bryan Mann (RR) -- R
Just a nice one - spun to the right out of a Right D.

021 Swamp Rat -- Charles Oldham -- R
Brahmer-ish bull that just leaped around the whole 8. Pretty showy - hung in the air, kept his head up - but didn't really have any down. 73 pts.

027 Swamper -- Mitchell Rogers -- R
Little brown bull that spun to the right. They called out an 82, but I'm not sure if that was right. Glad I'm not a judge. I might've had Tice Hopkins on 612 over this ride, but Hopkins was on my side of the arena and Rogers was across the way.

610 High Voltage -- Jeremi Kirkland -- L
Little TV star brindle that everyone knows. SPUN to the left. Looks like the proper strategy would be to try and sit still and not move too much... bull kind of jumps straight up and falls straight down while spinning 90 MPH. No rear and drop action.

Here's a guy - Kirkland - who had 24.5 Tour points after Laughlin. Why wasn't he in Guymon? DRAWN OUT. Clovis & Red Bluff too. What's wrong with this picture? Seems like if the PRCA is going to make the Tour rodeos special, they will have to figure out how to make sure the contenders for the current Tour Finals GET ENTERED ahead of guys who have little or no chance of making the cut.

624 Wing Span -- Buskin Wilson -- L
White w/ brindle patches. Started left with a lot of kick. Buskin took him squatting and later said that probably wasn't a good idea.

612 Cueball -- Tice Hopkins -- L
White bull with black spots. I'm looking at my notes.... I wrote down "left... WOW" This little bull really whirled it to the left - in the latch and fast. Got in the air, but not a lot of kick. Tice stuck it on him... got run off his rope right at the whistle. Exciting looking ride... 78 pts. Good thing I'm not a judge.

599 Blackhawk -- Blu Bryant -- L
Black horned bull that spun the the left kicking over his head and drifted about the length of one bucking chute. The best draw in this perf. Blu made a perfect ride to win 2nd at the rodeo - 86 pts.

The Okie Overachievers
These four bulls went above and beyond the call of duty in Beaumont.

080 Red Dog -- Chad Powell -- L
Cute red muley that would rather try to bust your melon than play spin-the-bull rider. Rear and drop with extra DROP.

92 Moonshine -- James Oden -- L
White bull that got it to the left in the latch and had some BUCK to go with it. A handful.

092 Okeechobee Wipeout -- Jamie Langston -- L
OUCH - A lot of action packed into a little bit bit of time and space. Thank goodness for the horn removal surgery.

911 -- Danell Tipton -- R
Little Black bull had a BIG league first jump, went a couple more and spun to the right faster than a pinwheel in a monsoon. In fact, he spun so fast that he spun up a dust devil that sucked up all kinds of debris including most of the paperwork out of the announcers stand, half a dozen pair of chaps, and three of the lighter committeemen.

Well... ok that's a lie - but he WAS pretty quick.
