Bull Notes - Jackson, MS
Dixie National Livestock Show & Rodeo

Feb 9, 2002

Jackson Sheets

Herd: Harper & Morgan Wheezers & NOW, all new YO-YOs

I was just this morning sitting barefoot on my front porch steps munching on some boiled peanuts and reflecting on how, every February, all southerners are reminded that there is no finer place on earth to live than in DIXIE. I wondered what Bryan might be up to. Probably counting sheep to see if any are lost under the snow. BRRR! My heart goes out, but there's just not enough space in Paradise, and some have to rough it elsewhere.

Not that DIXIE could not stand a little improvement. It would be nice if we could eradicate the mosquitoes and termites - once and for all. A fortuitous shift in global weather patterns might send all hurricanes straight to New Jersey. And we could stand to have more rodeos like Jackson's DIXIE National.

Jackson is probably the best rodeo in the south. It's not as hard to get to as Florida, and with a lot of perfs, there's a good chance for a lot of guys to get in. Especially if you need to be there on Saturday, since they have three perfs. Most circuit guys can work Jackson on any perf because it's not such a long drive unless you are coming from south Florida.

Harper & Co usually have pretty even pens at Jackson, and they usually bring in some sub-contractor bulls so they can rest theirs for Baton Rouge which starts the day after Jackson is over. This year they have some Salt River bulls there, though none were out on Saturday when I was there. So there's a good chance of drawing a winner in almost every perf. On top of all that, they have a great dance, and I'd be willing to bet that Jackson, MS has the highest ratio of beautiful females per square mile than anywhere else in the south. If you rule out college towns there is no doubt that Jackson takes the cake.

A note: I know most of you have heard that Joe Rush got hurt pretty bad at Lake Charles, and I heard from Adam Wood that they were taking him home to GA. Saturday and looks like he's going to be ok. He was in the hospital in L.C. all week. If anybody knows anything about how Joe is doing, you might post it on the message board.

Saturday, February 9 - 3 perfs

On some of these, I don't know if the guy on the sheet was who got on or not, because they had several mount outs.

12:00 PM Matinee -- Harper & Morgan Bulls -- The UNLOVED ones

UNLOVED because half the guys turned out in this perf which was fine with Jason Scott - he was the only guy to get one rode. Jason would like to thank everyone involved for his LARGE day money check.

196 Batman -- Levi Yoder (?) -- R
Fat black muley that's usually a pretty good spinner. Can have an off day now and then. He was nice here - around to the left and dug a hole. The only weird thing about him is that he will have a hop skip and a little back-up sometimes before he comes around. Not a bad thing because it kind of sets you up for the spin. When I've seen him have a bad day, it's because he tried to come around too close and ended up hop-skipping and walking on his front end all the way down the front of the bucking chutes.

122 Red Wine -- Mount out? -- L
Just a sweet potato here. Close your eyes and hold on tight - count one-alligator... two-alligator... three-alligator... When you get to eight, jump off. Really hung in the air and didn't cover any ground. Turned back both ways.

532 Raspberry Wine -- Lawrence Stanard (?) -- L
Hasn't lost a step since last year. Really puts a lot of effort into bucking, but it would be hard for him to kick any LESS. DRAAAAGS his but and moves forward a lot. Looks really hard to ride. Came to the left here. This guy gave him a lot of effort, but came down.

11 Jigger -- Willie Church -- R
Red bull that's been around a while. Started good here, but sold out and got nasty. YUCK. Got Willie right at the whistle.

303 Jitterbug -- Mount out -- L
White w/black spots - one horn up, one down. Small bull - turned back to the left, slow and flat. not really enough to place on.

76 Stone Cold -- Jason Scott -- R
Big brindle horned bull. Hopped & dropped in a tight circle to the left - Jason was in the 70's for a BIG day money.

H141 Bojangles -- Jared Jacques -- R
Big old red bull. Just went straight.... nasty looking. A clunker.

M11 Turn the Page -- Derald Riche -- R
This bull looks like a small version of the old 022 Blue Heat they used to have. Bucked good here -- about three and whirled it to the left. Good bull.

4:00 PM Matinee -- Harper & Morgan Bulls -- Some OLD - Some NEW

6 Red Whiskey -- Mount out? -- L
New red horned bull - out about three or four and around to the left. Looked pretty nice.

191 Gun Powder -- Lonnie Carpenter -- L
Black bull that's supposed to be good, but sold out on TV at Montgomery last year. He came around the end of the gate to the right - firing pretty hard. Threw Lonnie off.

H131 Pokey -- Jamie Langston -- R
A new red bull - came around to the left pretty strong. Plenty of kick, moved forward a little - not just a spinner, but looked good.

16 Cousin It -- J.D. McMichael - R
Little brindle that was pretty sorry last year on the winter run. Must be getting the right feed or something, because he went about 3 and GINNED it to the right here. Fast.

F8 Roan Rocket -- Scott Sanders -- L
Just a big old brahmer looking - butt dragging - flat spinning - no kicking sucker.

22 Super Freak -- Jim Buckner -- R
Super-Freaky spotted bull. Turned back to the right and had some wild looking gyrations going on. Tried to jump out of his hide. Reminded me of A23 Nitro.

645 Copper Top -- Sheldon Isom -- L
Cool spinner. Went about 2 and chased his little tail around to the right. Nothing rank. I can't remember the score..

103 Swamp Rat -- Trent Cormier -- L
Same old trip - LEAPY red muley.

8:00 PM -- Harper & Morgan Bulls -- The PRIME TIME pen

12 Knothead -- Micky Owens -- R
Big brown bull with horns -- ran off down the pen. Don't know if there was something wrong with him or what... I think they placed high on this bull recently.

43 Sherry's Pet -- Adam Wood -- R
Big tall classic looking brindle with horns. Came around to the left a little flat, but good. Probably 19-20

G1 Copen Gas Hog -- Chad Lovern -- R
Wound it around and around to the right. Slowed down, and almost stopped, but picked it back up and finished strong. Chad stuck it on him - 80 pts.

236 Sling Shot -- Brad McKee(?) -- R
Really had a good day. Came to the right and got Brad(?) quick.

605 Spotted Fever -- Bill Goolsbey -- L
Believe it or not -- this is a spotted bull. BIG horns. Turned back to the left - pretty solid. Kept his head down low. Looked like just a good spinner.

420 Gusto -- Ty C. Portienier -- L
Went both ways - good, but has lost a step since last year.

K5 Spice Boy -- Bobby Albertson -- L
Black white faced muley. Came around to the left & looks to have a pretty tricky corner. Doesn't spend a lot of time hanging in the air... stays close to the fround. Kind of slung his head straight up when he came.

J93 Red Baron -- Chad Phipps -- L
Neat-O brindle. Spun a hole in the ground to the left. Couldn't ask for a better one. 82 points.

4 Mofo -- Justin Daugherty -- L
Hereford baldfaced muley. He did spin to the right, but was real nasty before he came around. Hard to get TO the turnback. Don't know after that.

H2 Flashback -- Blue Rodriguez -- L
100% YUCK-O-RAMA. Nothing nice about this one. Looked like a ballon you let the air out of.

9 Red Wasp -- Tyler Fowler -- R
Little red that Tyler claimed was not supposed to be good. Quick little sucker -- he came right, shot forward one nasty looking jump and whirled it 90 to nothing to the left. Tyler was 85 on him. Nice ride. Waspy little bull.

M16 Smoke -- Jordie Campbell -- R
Remember this bull. If you can imagine F22 Jim Jam disguised as 101 Rampage, you'd pretty much have it. He's a good sized black horned bull... looks innocent enough. Stands ok in the box, but when they cracked the latch on him here, this sucker was REDLINED to the right in about half a split second. Poor Jordie got max G-force too fast... got sling-shotted. No shame, though - this sucker bucked -- NFR rank pen bucked. If Tyler's bull was 21-22, this one had to be 24-25. Bring your riding britches -- he's a handful.

James says they got SMOKE (crippled at the time) from a sale barn and he's got about 20 outs on him -- including what they've bucked him with just a dummy. He looks like the real deal.
