Feb 5, 2002 - Press Release - San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo: Bull Riders Break Streak SAN ANTONIO --- Saturday was the day for the bulls at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo. There was only one qualified ride during the matinee and evening performances here. Justin Hermanson, a student at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Texas, was the only man to last the required eight seconds. Hermanson was the second rider out. The judges awarded Hermanson a 55 points score and the option of a re-ride. A 55 point score was not likely to win him any money and with 10 more riders to go that could easily move ahead of him, Hermanson decided to try to better himself. Instead the bull got the better of him and he received a no-score for being bucked off before the required eight seconds was up. “I was riding for first,” Hermanson said. “I didn’t know that all the other guys would buck off. It’s the cowboy thing to do, ride for first every time you nod your head. If I would have known that all the other guys were going to buck off, I might have made a different decision.” As a result of Hermanson’s decision, it was bulls 20, cowboys 0 after Saturday’s rodeos. That changed here on Sunday. Three of the 10 bull riders made it to the whistle and received scores. Jason McClain, from Kiowa, Colo., was at the top of the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Scoreboard with a score of 81 points. McClain, who is a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier rode the bull named Regurgitate, named for his ability to throw up cowboys. James Oden, a newcomer from Kaufman, Texas, is right behind McClain with a score of 80 points. The other rider to get a score was Jeff Rupert from Shelley, Idaho. Rupert only received 66 points for his eight-second effort, however, with the number of bull riders that have been bucked off here already, Rupert will nearly certainly get another opportunity to ride. All of the bull riders here compete once in a long round. The top 60 from that round move into a progressive round. Their scores will be added together and the top twelve will qualify for the final Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Round on Feb. 17. All three of Sunday’s riders will most likely move into the progressive round and have an opportunity to qualify for the finals. The fourth performance of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday.
