NFR 2000

The PEN:  A TEAM  All Pro Offensive Unit

In order to fit the various bulls together where hopefully everyone has a chance to place on what they have drawn, we split the A TEAM putting most out in the high performance first performance pen but taking four of the more difficult bulls and moving them into the second performance high degree of difficulty pen of bulls.   In all likelihood they will be combined again for the final performance.

We used to start with a pen of nice spinners.  Changed this year because I think the guys have the best chance to ride these bulls while they are fresh and have a month of adrenaline pumping.   It’s a better type of pressure than having to be afraid of rolling off a spinner.

Most of these are the bulls that are well known superstars that you see in final go rounds on telecasts.  Seldom ridden and scores should be from 86-97.   It’s drawn up to where there could be some great rides.

First Performance  Draw:

Tyler Fowler                                    105    Super Star                                        Guildry/Nelson

Outstanding bull…. can have two types of days… one high performance and one more difficult.   At the PBR finals in this very building, in the round prior to the Finals… someone scored a 90 on STAR.    This Alabama boy can RIDE… Denny Flynn type moves.

Shane Drury                                     10  Freckles                                               Guidry/Nelson

When it comes to high performance, this bull has to be one of the top three in three world of pro rodeo.   The only rap on this bull is that he will lay down on his belly once you get your rope pulled.  When you nod he always stands up before he comes out.   If he beats you around the corner it’s dirt city.    Shane might start off with a mid 90 point ride.

Jesse Bail                                         46    Copenhagen Zandy                                     Andrews

These’s a BIG ol’ heart in this NFR veteran bull.   He’s been here so many times that he drives a cab in the afternoons. Really good draw to be in the mid to high 80’s on.   Bucks kinda like a nostril hooked tarpon….  the front end is always UP in the air.    Since Jesse rides broncs tough, he might be used to high headed farm animals.

Danell Tipton                                   080   Red Dog                                            Beutler/Gaylord

If Danell wasn’t chiseled like THE ROCK  some of other guys might try to make him trade bulls.  VERY cool little bull.   Probably will get spurred just a little but can get a guy on the reversal.   Two Okies do battle here.  I’ll take the ROCK.

Dan Wolfe                                        K66   Rapid Fire                                        Big Bend

This is the best bull I saw all year but I only saw him three trips.  Pocatello, the MGM, and the Cow Palace.   This arena hasn’t been that good to him in the past.  Dan knows this bull since they both reside up in moss brain country. A former bull of the year Rapid Fire if anything has had his best year—IN YEARS.   BRO World Champ Rockin Wolfe’s heart has to be a thumpin.

Rob Bell                                           G1  Gas Hog                                    Harper/Morgan/Auger

This black bull has some SERIOUS gas…. about like any Texan who eats anything.   This little piggy doesn’t waste anytime getting it.  Thinking that Vince Stanton won a round on him here last year.    The New Canadian champ has to be excited.   Drawing this bull is about as lucky as finding a pretty girl in SASKATOON  (mooses live there).

Fred Boettcher                              780   Diamonds Ghost                            Guidry/Nelson

Not sure which of the line dancing partners owns this bull.   Bull ownership these days is about as mixed up as Morman polygamy.   In the bull world this is Brad Pitt…. think they were 92.5 in the short go at the PBR finals.   Should be exciting.   But when you’re from Wisconsin… watching cheese form is a highlight.   Always talented ... Fred’s riding has become really solid…. just like any Wisconsin Ground Hog is if he screws up on his barometer reading.

Gregory Potter                                 77   Skoals’ Yellow Jacket                           Flying 5

Another former bull of the year.   Not the rankest but real solid…. Robey Condra.   Can back out of the chute but rides really good if you can just get around the first corner in good shape.  Originally came from Joe Berger.   I’d imagine Sonny Riley has been collecting semen on this bull.   I’m sure Greg’s been on him a time or two.   Probably rode him but there was so much SMOKE in the arena—I couldn’t tell.

Philip Elkins                                     66   Skoals King Kong                               Dell Hall

ANOTHER  former bull of the year.  HUGE… weighs more than all 9 of Donnie Kish’s bulls together.   Had a couple of judges tell me that the best ride they’d seen in years was Jesse Bail on KONG at Sikeston this past August.  Very athletic for a big boy.    Has had days when he looked like a runaway AMRACK engine but has bucked good here.  Good one to start on for Giant slayer Elkins.

Kagan Sirett                                              301  Copenhagen Cash                             Growney

Think he was runner up for the 2000 bull of the year award.    It must have been “Be Kind to Holsteins” week when the bull riders voted.   Supposedly a Mr. T calf but then that’s about as certain as the Florida elections. GORE and BUSH….  sounds like bull rider lingo.   Fresh off a Cow Palace win Kagan ought to like this draw.

Lee Akin                                                    X4    Skoal’s Explosive Binion                                Cervi

Like in drag racin  to ride this bull you have to have your motor running.   Winning that Summer TOUR finals the had at Mesquite last October—Akin was probably riding better than anyone else at that time.   Think Potter won Vernal on this trying little brindle who’s named after one of Mike Cervi’s sons.  Not sure where the Explosive part of the name came from… maybe someone mentioned reorganizing the PRCA board.   That or bareback riggings.   BOOOM.

Josh O’Byrne                                             007   Copenhagen Gyro                                                Beard

Two guys who have had their injuries to deal with.  Gyro got hurt late last year and no one thought that he’d ever make it back.   TIMEX O’Byrne has had his own injuries to deal with but just keeps on tickin’.  Should be good WATCHing.   Bull is pretty strong.  A dink in this pen, Josh might only be 88 on the GYMASTER.

Robey Condra                                           R8    Copenhagen Kish                                       KERBY

The Kerby’s purchased this bull from Don Kish…. think they bred him quite a bit this spring.   Don’t think he’s been ridden this year and never marked below a 22+.   Don’t know how much this youngster won from August on but it had to be a TON.    Not sure if he’s married… you never know about Texans.   Marry their sisters and stuff.  If he isn’t married…. he probably will be by the time he leaves here.   He’s bound to get lots of interesting proposals.

Cory Check                                                         MT   Mighty Tricky                         Broken Arrow (Taylor)

Not sure that this white spotted bull has been ridden this year.   Thomas Taylor hauled his mini herd to Cheyenne, Dodge City, and Colorado Springs them campaigned them hard on the PBR trail this fall.   Two bull riders from Wisconsin qualifying       in the same year… well that’s about as common as Bill Clinton having a lock on his Zipper.

Check must have watched old Wonder Woman reruns…. he just appeared out of nowhere late in the year and finally secured a birth on the last weekend of the season.    Boettcher swears that Cory dresses like Wonder Woman when he’s just hangin’ out around the house.

CODY HANCOCK                                   101   Skoal’s Border Patrol                                Flying 5

WOW… the 2000 BULL OF THE YEAR.    Kagan won the short go at the Cow Palace on this great little bull. 101 although talented relies more on his BIG HEART.    Same thing for Hancock.   Both of them try really hard. They’re Tony the Tigers… GUUUURRRRREAT.   The turn back is the deal on this little bull… he rides really good after that.

Think someone told me that the deal was to drag your rope back a bit but the little bull kicks so much… nah… musta been another bull.    At one time the dragging back theory was popular but John Quintana kinda changed the game plan…. he run it as far up there as he could and leave it there.
