2000 NFR         FOURTH PERFORMANCE RESULTS

Pen:   LINEBACKERS @ PUNKS

Ended up being a crappy pen.  REAL crappy.   After seeing a couple of NFR   rookie bulls not buck last night... I got uneasy about some of the other rookies--   mostly out of the Street Punk pen of bulls.   Stuck them in here.  Figured that there would be enough buck-offs that a guy might place on them.  A couple guys did but it was an ugly pen to watch.

Rode 6 of 17

  • 1/2           Wolfe                                    84                           $11,756.56
  • 1/2           Potter                                    84                           $11,756.56
  • 3.             Bail                                        79                           $ 7, 837.72
  • 4.             Hancock                                75                           $ 5,507.58
  • 5.             Fowler                                   74                           $ 3,389.28
  • 6.

Judges Order:  Knowles    Overtsreet    Horton    Davis

Dan Wolfe                             T32         Ice Patch               Three Hills           84  21-21-21-21

Some people thought he shoulda won the round by himself.  Looks like they docked his ride. Most of the time being up toward the first is a disadvantage scorewise.   There is a formula how the determine the order but I’m not sure they are going by it.  Need to find out what it is. Sometimes because we have so few bulls on the right delivery they have to change things up.

Greg Potter                          G28   Crossroads            Mesquite    84  20-21-19-20

I was looking over my shoulder but it looked like the bull bucked good.... jumped out of it. Greg split the round due to his ride scores.   This bull’s daddy won a go round buckle here too.

Jesse Bail                             U4    Lookout                        Honeycutt              79  19-20-22-22

How come the judges saw this bull so differently?  The angle...Two of them could see the rolls. Bull covered LOTS of ground.  About the 6 second point Jesse disappeared from sight... POOF he  reappeared.   Standing ovation.

Cody Hancock                      T58   Bruce                          Three Hills           75  18-18-18-18  RR opt

Almost took him off after the Great Lakes Circuit Finals.... should have.   Cody was tough in the average so he declined the reride option.

Philip Elkins                                        54T   Hornet                         Korkow          20-21-20-20   5.4

I didn’t get to see the entire ride... when I looked away the little bull was having a good day and Philip was riding him easy.  I thought he rode his bull.

Tyler Fowler         150   Bell Dinger                Western                RR  fell

 Should have brought T2 instead.

T55         Little Drifter     Three Hills              74  20-20-20-19

Bull really bucked out of there then took off like a ground squirrel having a picante enema.   Fell on Tyler at the end.  Outstanding effort  on Fowler’s part.

Kagan Sirett                         21   Black Jack                   Cowtown                16-16-17-16  RR  option

I screwed up twice here.... first by bringing one bull that far.   LESSON #1:  Never bring a bull to the NFR by himself.   If you can’t take two--take none. The pro officials at last year’s First Frontier Circuit Finals had told me there were two NFR bulls back there.  I monitored their performance records this year... watched some tape on them--talked to bull ANAL-ists  George Gibbs and Steve Knowles after this year’s circuit finals--took a chance--got smoked.  The black bull kept looking toward the backside like he’d never seen a right D.... Had a different flankman.   Fought the chute.   He’s in the sale if you want to bid against the Golden Arches.

LESSON #2:  If they didn’t send their regular flankman this year and their bull didn’t buck--don’t call us--we’ll call you.  Don’t wait by the phone.

The second screw up was advising Kagan to take a reride.  Even though we were half way through the bull riding and they’d only ridden three--I figured they’d ride more than six.  I knew Bokeman was first place if ridden ... I’d seen Fred ride him at the Mesquite Tour Finals... Kagan wasn’t in the average... he was going to be 70 or less..... $13,000 rounds.... the kid can really ride--I gotta say “Go for it”.   Ended up costing him sixth place.  Hopefully in the long run it will make him a lot more.

Few people have this kid’s talent...a God Given gift.   To be the World Champ you can settle for nothing but winning firsts.   It’s the Donnie Gay, Lane Frost, Tuff Hedeman , Ty Murray mentality.   The first three were absolutely miserable and miserable to be around unless they were WINNING... numero uno.   Saw Lane take a reride once when he had third locked up.... everyone was telling him not too-- that was just the way he was.   Won the go round by 6 points.

Saw Ty get on TWO rerides (each ranker) in one performance at the COORS SHOWDOWN— finally bucked off.... never said a word.... that’s the way he plays the game.

Saw Tuff take a reride trying to move up... bucked him off.... reporter asked him if he was sorry he made the decision.  “The day I even have to think about a deal like that--I’ll quit."

If I had to do it again would I tell Kagan to take his marking?  You bet.  Because of what 6th paid?   Nope.  Because Kirsten Vold socks hard.  That broad can throw a punch.   I’d advise the other riding event directors to remember that the next time they set a short go round at one of her rodeos.   Took all my martial arts skills just to survive.

LESSON #3:  Never get a Vold woman even slightly irritated.

Kagan Sirett                                         731  Bokeman                      Andrews    ( 23-23-22-23  2.3 )

This Bodacious calf really bucked.  Blew--kicked... went away from Kagan’s  hand.

Fred Boettcher                     42  Boomshacalaca             Andrews       22-22-22-22    6.0

Figured Fred would win the round if Shane didn’t make the whistle.  Didn’t get to see it but BOOMS a pattern bucker... has done pretty much the same thing every year he’s been here. We usually start him in the Linebacker Pen--he gets a guy... the judges mark him a 22-23.... tell me the bull should be on the A TEAM.  After I get done laughing I stick him in the Big E’s and he gets ridden and the judges 19-20 him.  Same judges it’s just that you put him in a fleet of DESTROYERS he looks like a PT boat.

Lee Akin                               S7  DR O               Wayne Vold             23-23-22-23  6.3

I was busy doing something else and missed this ride.  Judges said this bull really bucked hard.   Lee musta been sticking it on him too.

Danell Tipton                       U51   High Gear                   Franklin            19-19-22-19  4.3.

Chris musta saw something I didn’t.  This is a good bull--he just didn’t buck.

Josh O’Byrne                      T99    Tommy Boy               Lovelace    18-18-18-18  5.0

LESSON #4:  Never let appreciation for the good things a guy does for your event during the year--effect your bull picks.   A dink is a dink no matter who owns him.

Cory Check          64    Price Charming          Growney/Kish        85  22-19-20-21+  5.99

Thought Cory had this bull knocked out but he’s strong and just keeps working on you.

Rob Bell                9   Wimpy              Beutler/Gaylord                  23-23-22-23  2.0

Kinda was in the middle of something else but it looked like this bull was rank around the corner. Everyone knows that after 3-4 seconds he usually flattens out and goes down to a 20+.  Think George even 18’ed him here one year with Blu Bryant in the tenth go round.  The first and ONLY time George has been the lowest guy.

Robey Condra                       451   Addiction                     Northcott       21-20-21-22   4.4

Didn’t see it.    This bull is in the sale.   Robey can buy him and eat him.   Fair’s fair.

Shane Drury                        F6  Hard Copy        Harper/Morgan/Auger      22-24-23-24  2.9

What a wreck.   Spectacular buck off (like only Shane can perform) won this bull the night’s best bull buckle.   But the wreck started long before the gate cracked.   First of all this bull is way too big for these chutes... just 6 inches wider would make a big difference... allow a guy to cowboy up.   So even though they had the back slide open and a rope behind him this bull was all wadded up--laying on the backside.  Shane couldn’t even get his legs down. The entire performance had been screwed up--there was a Wrangler bull fight waiting in the wings--so TIME became precious... apparently more precious than the bull riders lives.  So anyway... things were going slow with Shane--had to be.   Then things get loud and ... they try to pull the bull’s head around...doesn’t work--bull mashes even harder-- guys were trying to work the slide...others trying to push him over.   Shane might’ve had on brief opportunity to go--but it was only an instant.... bull has his leg mashed on the back side.  Big bull--little leg.   The more they yanked on the bull’s horns--the more the bull squished Shane’s leg. I’m thinking  that he’s been in there too long... hand is probably numb.... no feeling in that leg.... EXCEDRIN headache from all the yellin’.... So now they smarten up and get the 4 X  4 to put between the bull’s front shoulder and the backside.  Should have been there in the first place--while he was pulling his rope... he hardly could even get his rope ON the bull. So they roll him... go somewhere else... come back... more stress.... finally nods....didn’t have a good seat--.... didn’t really have a chance.

Should we leave this bull at home?  He’s been here several times.... really bucks... he’s just too big for the chutes.   He’s gonna lean ... but if you start with the 4X4 in there....  stay quiet..... kind of work him around-- guys will slide and ride... and win on this bull.
