2000 NFR                   EIGHTH PERFORMANCE RESULTS

Pen:   The Back Street Boys

The BIG E’s .  There were some bucking SOB’s (sons of BULLS) out. Whew.... really bucky.   Also some great efforts.   Great effort is what‘s really important in this pen regardless of the results.   Everyone sacked up.

Rode 4-15

  • 1/2           Bail                                    91                           $11,756.56
  • 1/2           Wolfe                                91                           $11,756.56
  • 3.             Bell                                    86                           $ 7,837.72
  • 4.             Elkins                                 81                           $ 5,507.58

Judges Order:   Overstreet       Knowles                Davis         Horton

Jesse Bail                             CL  Clayaton’s Pet              Guidry/Nelson

Big time bull ride.  5-6 hopping and skipping and turned back into his hand.

Dan Wolfe                             99   Nine-O                           Guidry/Nelson

You had to have been a bull rider to fully appreciate this.   Not many bull riders either today or in the past could have ridden this bull going away from their hands.   Bull was going NINE O and moving forward.

Rob Bell                                42  Boom Shacalaca            Andrews

High Brahmer leaps then turns back.  Away from your hand he’s probably going to get a guy. And look impressive. Went into Rob’s hand.  He coulda drank a Molsons.   Probably be a $2,000 fine if he did, though.

Philip Elkins                        604  No Can Do                    Growney/Kish

The judges docked this bull because he lost his footing.  Don’t know how Philip kept from either slapping him or going down on this MEAN little sucker’s head.   NO CAN had a direct hit on Smets against a panel.   Fortunately the Justin Healers were right there--to help the bull. Rob has the hardest head in rodeo.

Cody Hancock                      112  Red Alert                     Walls

Roan bull went out circled back toward the catch pen.  Looked like Cody was going to handle him then this sucker did a HI HO SILVER... and slammed him.  And I mean SLAMMED. I don’t think anyone EVER coulda got by it.

Robey Condra                       78  Tuff E Nuff                     Guidry/Nelson

He really tried this huge bull .  This big boy BUCKS but he’s my buddy.

Tyler Fowler                                         70  Malpractice                    Guidry

If anyone asks you if this bull has ever been ridden--you can YEP... Tyler Fowler made a perfect ride on him at the 2000 NFR.   PERFECT.   The judges missed this bull--he was a bad to ride.  Fowler had it figured out... how to handle his free arm.   Jade got him for a slap--it was right in front of him--15 feet away--max.   Don’t know if Butch did too.  I was kinda off to one side and behind Jade--and I couldn’t of got him.  Don’t think he touched him.  I never looked at the tape. That was just my snap judgement at the time--which was the same thing Robinson had to make. You see it you call it--PERIOD.

But I think... in the future--if it takes two judges to award a reride then it should take two to call a slap.  Fairs--fair.  We have TWELVE BEADY EYES watching these rides--at least half of which are crossed.   That’s what I was talking about last night.  To ride rank bulls you have to be down and out over them and there is going to be incidental contact.   I don’t think it should be called.

Lee Akin                               K78   Unforgiven   Big Bend

Geez this bull bucked.   I mean highlight film type stuff.   Okay... how come the reride option? Here’s what a chute judge told me..... Lee was sliding up and just about to nod and the chute boss said something like “okay”... he was saying it to encourage Lee to nod—telling him that that he had a good shot... but…. the gate men thought the chute boss was telling them to open the gate—so they did.

Lee had a good seat and rode him two jumps before the big wreck happened.  I’m sure his concentration had been broken.  Everything has to go right to ride a bull this rank.  While having a chute judge hurt Tyler it helped Lee.   He got a reride option.   At many rodeos he wouldn’t have because there aren’t chute judges and the half way across the arena—get mowed down type judges would’ve said that he had a good seat and tried the bull.  Unless the gatemen or flank men fess up--a bull rider will never get an option.   Tough deal for Lee.

RERIDE +100  Playmate                    Western

Right handers have NO chance on the MATE.

Fred Boettcher                       76  Red Crusher                Flying U/Rosser

Another great effort.  We finally got to see this big boy buck farther than a jump.    And he BUCKED.   He was just jumping and kicking--circling back toward the chutes but he was about as rank a J & K’er as you’ll ever see.

Greg Potter                          142  Voo Doo Jr.                  Bailey

Never got the little creep started.   There is a reason this bull is unridden.   Just not sure what it is.

Shane Drury                        S7    DR. O                               Wayne Vold

I don’t know what it looked like on TV but in person--from the angle I had--this was a BAD Jose’. Tried everything--and it took everything he had to get Shane.  Outstanding effort .

Josh O’Byrne                      G21  Dodge Durango                 Mesquite

Josh tried.  The big bull is really cerebral.   He has three Doctor Degrees from Harvard. There is a reason there is a $50,000 bounty on this bull.   Hard to believe that they started the bounty at $500 and went up in $500 increments for each buck-off.   That's 99 trips.

Cory Check                          731  Bokeman                         Andrews

This Bodacious calf is a bucking sonofagun.... and Cory nearly rode him.  Fresh… I think he would’ve.  This Check guy.... impresses me.   Big Cods and we aren’t speaking about fishes.

Danell Tipton                       88  Color Me Bad                Double J

Big high leap and turned back right in the gate but sucked back too.  Danell made a good move but the sucky thing got him.

Kagan Sirett                         9   Wimpy                              Beutler/Gaylord

Mr. SMOKEY thought that the Wimpmaster was too NICE to be in this pen.  Probably right-- he’s seen him a bunch and knows he gets to spinning flat.   WIMP got lucky and drew a left hander and lefts don’t ride this bull when he really bucks--which he did.

I watched Kagan take his wrap and noticed his hand was off to the side a bit and unless he knew something that I didn’t-- I figured he had no chance.   I’ve seen that happen on more than one guy here.   For most bull riders it makes an already tough job darn near impossible.

Best Bull Buckle:   K78    Unforgiven

Bull Scores:    Be posted later.

After 8th Performance:

All these guys can do is ride what they’ve drawn.  Numbers and statistics mean absolutely

nothing in bull riding.  It’s a whole new ball game every time you get on.
