Dilemma 5

So what happened?  Did the PRCA board reorganize their board structure?

Nope.

Must have been a been a war though... plenty of action.. . …cussin...  screamin’... blood--fun stuff, huh?

Nope.

Nah... the topic didn’t even come up until the last 5 minutes of a 75 minute meeting.   The Chairman brought it up for discussion. and one of the proposal’s authors... mumbled something about a PARTICULAR timed event director having the votes to block it... and then he up and withdrew the proposal.  Just like that.

Geez.   if Ida known that they were going to run like lit on fire Warf Rats I wouldn’t have spent the money on getting my Mousekateer Ears dry cleaned for the meeting.

At least the Boy Scouts have adult leadership... what a joke.

So why did the rodeo committees and stock contractors duck?

THEY whine that the time-ee had them blocked.   Probably did... but you never know.  Sometimes during a lengthy discussion people will change their minds.   They needed 9 of 11 votes.   The Independent business men probably would’ve abstained.... so all they needed was 7 of 9 votes.   They mighta THOUGHT that both the timed event directors (not the event reps) were solidly against it.   I think only one was... the one who would have eliminated his own position by passing it.   The other... he pretty much votes his OWN conscious.  They also coulda figured that one of the two riding event directors would vote against it since he too would’ve eliminated his position.  Guess we’ll never know... they didn’t give him a chance.   And they should’ve.   They should’ve given RODEO a chance.

They should’ve brought the proposal to a vote.... just to find out who was putting their own their own interests ahead of rodeo’s.   It would’ve at least been on record.   But they didn’t even try.

How do you respect people like that?   They left their constituents hanging... plagued with all sorts of problems like turn outs, slack, and lots of other stuff with NO CHANCE of any solutions.   The board IS and WILL remain DEADLOCKED on any rules addressing those problems.

When those guys withdrew their proposal--they left the future of RODEO hanging.

So what REALLY happened?   It would only be a guess on my part.

I THINK.... they really didn’t care about reorganizing for any other reason than to get rid of the two Independent Business Director positions.   After they withdrew the proposal they tossed olive branches toward the two business guys...”Hopefully we can work together in the future... blah... blah... blah”.   Thought I was going to puke.   And THIS time it wasn’t the lunch meat that made me sick.

Or maybe... when the stock contractor organization started downloading the Dilemma articles from this website and mailing them all over the place--some of their constituents probably didn’t think that the 7-7 structure was a good deal.   I would guess that they weren’t sure they could control the Contract Personnel vote--particularly the person holding the vote at the moment.   I’ll bet they use that as an excuse.... NOW.

Or maybe they wanted to try to get the riding events and timed events cutting each other’s cinches.   That’s going to happen anyway.  It is inevitable.   Different animals trapped in the same zoo.  If the Commissioner ever actually went through with his proposed (in concept only) Riding Event Tour THIS group of timed event reps wouldn’t go for the deal even though the concept has BEEN approved for more than a YEAR.   Unanimously supported I might add.   They were being stirred up before the NFR and boiled over a little at the NFR contestant orientaion meeting.  The know that the captains of the PRCA ship won’t even attempt to sail in stormy seas.  They’ll remain tied to the dock.

A riding events tour will NEVER happen inside the PRCA.   The window of opportunity closed months ago.  That is going to disappoint a lot of riding event guys out there trying to make a living.  Guys who want to take the best cowboys and best stock, get on television, and DO something rather than WAITING for some outside party to come drop an opportunity in their laps.   The riding eventers have been EXPECTING the tour ever since the Commissioner first brought up the idea.  When the PRCA board ratified it--they thought it was a done deal.   It should have been.

The Riding Event directors will be expected (by their constituents--the people they are supposed to be looking out for) to retaliate.  Should the timed events be allowed to hold the riding event hostage?  That’s ANOTHER subject we will explore..... but we’ll do it in another piece at another time.

Okay... we  got sidetracked there... back to the possible reasons the committee and stock contractor directors pulled their reorganization proposal.

Perhaps THIS Commissioner really didn’t want the tie breaking vote.  He probably is going to take less heat if he continues to operate under the “do whatever the hell you need to do” edict from the board of the directors.   Less hassle for him and an easy excuse for the board members.  They can deny support for any specific action or program and run for cover under the “whatever the hell he wants to do” umbrella.

Probably ALL those things played a part.   But regardless of their reasoning the proposal’s authors CHOSE to cut and run rather than fight it out.  No one should have left that room until they got it resolved.  The rodeo didn’t start for four days.  Even if they didn’t reorganize the board, they should have left with compromises and agreements on solutions for rodeo’s major problems.

The ONLY value of the reorganization plan was that MAYBE it would force the board to finally accept their elected responsibilities and SOLVE some problems other than their own personal ones.

Fact is THIS board structure WILL NOT WORK.... CANNOT WORK.    EVER.   While I like and respect most of the people on the board as individuals... as a GROUP operating under the illusion  (delusion) of being a board of directors entrusted with the privilege of caretaking professional rodeo and securing its future..... well .... THAT is another matter.

I come down hard on them.  Someone should.  When a person accepts a board position I expect a lot out of them.   When they walk into a meeting they have to come to do rodeo business... not take care of things that just they, their friends, or the PRCA administration wants.  Their first responsibility and duty is to take care of RODEO in its entirety.   I guess in their defense—that meeting for 3-4 hours every 3-4 months…. well what can you expect?

I’m glad I’m not on that board.   We have absolutely nothing in common.....  except baloney breath. A scrawny little mouse in a room full of FAT CAT rats.

Those are MY PERSONAL OPINIONS, of course.  I’m sure you could’ve found ......1.....2...3...4...5 ....  16 .... 18.... 21... 25?... either 25 or 26 other people in that board room who felt the opposite way. Majority rules... they’re right I’m wrong.  This is the United States and the best democracy in the world.   I’m proud to live here.

GOD Bless America.....

GOD bless Rodeo..... He better.  With this board and structure it doesn’t have a PRAYER.
