Some interesting notes on judge's opinions. I was at this event for the first perf, and while I didn't make any notes, or score the bulls so I could keep up with it, I left there with two firm opinions. The best ride I saw was AJ Hull on Booger Butt by a fair margin. The best bull I saw was Angel eyes by a lesser margin.
As for the AJ Hull ride, I was really surprised to see Marchi and Condra so close in score to him at the event. Turns out Fournier saw Condra's ride as the best, and Greer had Hull and Marchi tied for the best, and Condra's ride as the WORST. Which kind of caused them all to be jammed up together in the final score. I thought Hull's ride was best because in my mind he rode the best (and hardest to ride) bull that got rode in the short go, and didn't look shabby doing it. Greer had his bull marked highest amongst bulls that got rode by only half a point, and Fournier had 260 tied with Condra's bull for the highest that got rode. I'll grant you my memory is going away, because I can't remember whether it was Condra or Marchi whose bull was slower with a lot of up and down, but... I would have guessed Hull's ride to be 2 points better in final score than all others (1 point on my side had I been judging), and as it happened he was only half a point better in the end.
And while I thought Angel Eyes was the best bull I saw on the whole night, Greer had 1 other bull marked as high, and Fournier had 6 other bulls marked as high on his side.
This is not to say there was bad judging. Both of these guys know what they are looking at. But when there is a fairly even pen of bulls, it doesn't take that much waffling on either side to end up with all the scores jammed together (splits, etc.). The only real curious thing to me about the whole deal is that I can't remember whether 302 Wilfong was really that bad, or if Greer just had it out for him. Fournier didn't mark him in the 1st perf, but they had him 22-10 in the 2nd. Personally I don't think Philip Fournier would look at a ten point bull and see him as a 22.
