Notes:
This rodeo has always been part of a mini-run around Fort Smith, AR. Fort Smith draws guys from all over, and to make the trip worthwhile, many of these guys will work Licking and Cherokee, IA and whatever is in OK at the time.
On paper this rodeo doesn't look like it ought to draw any bull riders without being tied to Fort Smith, but as weak as this pen of bulls is, it isn't the weakest ever to appear at Licking. In the past 6 years, two previous years were weaker.
Couple of things happened this year though... For one, the riders rode 65%. That's good. If there are no minimum quality requirements for bulls, then the best thing riders can do to encourage culling is ride everything - especially the weak ones. A weak bull that can throw guys off can hang around forever in some herds.
Also, a bull called 96 Hollywood reappeared after a two year absence. What's so special about that? Well, his going back among active bulls ranks him 3522nd after this event. That means that there are only about 19 bulls presumed active that are historically weaker than old Hollywood. I've often considered forming an alliance with the meat packing industry so I could report the names and locations of bulls that they might ought to go pick up and save their owners the expense of hauling them to the sale barn. Hollywood would be close to the top of that report this week.
