Whenever I see where Wacey Cathey judged one of these events, I remember the first time I met him.

Back in the late 80's when I was just a kid, Wacey Cathey was already a certifiable legend, so it was a big deal for me to meet him. He was a hero to every young guy starting out in those days.

I entered Franklinton one year, which is late in the fall. In those days, The top 25 guys hit any and every rodeo that time of year trying to make sure they had enough to make the cut for the NFR. Me and a friend of mine were traveling in an old truck I had at the time that was so unreliable we had to play mechanic on it just about every time we stopped anywhere, and because of that I always had a well stocked toolbox in the camper.

After to rodeo, we naturally had jack with the truck to get it going. As it happened, David Fournier was parked right by us, and he had some minor thing with his truck we helped him with. While we were doing that, Wacey Cathey pulled up and asked if we had some tools and could help him rewind the odometer in his rental car. He knew David, naturally, but me and my buddy were mighty impressed that we got to help Wacey Cathey out - even if it was slightly illegal.
