PRCA: PRCA Rodeo
Jan 31, 2015
Notes:
This rodeo is kind of a big deal in the PRCA I guess, but processing the results for it makes me wonder why bull riders would even enter it. It paid off for the top few guys, but that was largely luck. They could have easily been 60-some odd points with no RR option, since most of the bulls here were extremely mediocre, or had bad trips anyway. It paid ~$4500 to win, which isn't bad, but given the kind of money guys who can ride can make nowadays it isn't great. Especially for having to go to SD in January. Guys paid rather expensive entry fees to come here and be 65 championship points and zero chance of winning other than hoping everyone falls off. If they aren't mad about that I'd have to guess they are just playing cowboy, and consider it part of the expense. There are a lot of rodeos in warmer climates with much better odds of drawing a bull you can win on.
Chandler Bownds was 48 points here and didn't take the RR option. There are times when turning down a RR is a sound business decision. This wasn't one of them. I can't fathom what must be going on there.
Quite a few guys bucked off bulls they could have been 75 points on. In the not too distant past, guys didn't even buy a PRCA card until they were damn well capable of sticking 99% of the bulls on the planet they could be 75 on, and that was nowhere near good enough to make the NFR. Going to pro rodeos sure is cool, but it's real expensive if you are just doing it to be cool.
