PBR Finals Day 1

By: Slade Long

What to look for in general: Everyone drew really well in round one. Better than any of the 6 previous nights at Cowtown. They could conceivably ride every bull in round one tonight. They won't, but the better riders should dominate here.

Therefore, every key matchup regarding the standings comes in round two (other than riders who mess up the nice bulls in round one). The second round will keep the party from getting out of hand by bringing in a bunch of big, ugly bouncers. The guys trying to go up the standings or stay on top, this is where they have to do the hard work.

Jose Vitor Leme on 36J Oyster Creek Brawler: This is the nicest to ride bull in this round. In fact, it's a little surprising to see him in this kind of pen. He may have looked good in Cowtown, but he's been dominated all year by left-handed guys and JVL is one of the best. Probably not a round-winning score here, but a nice draw for Leme. Most of the riders in this round, if they reached in and drew this bull out of this group would consider it a gift.

Sage Kimzey on 948 Black Harbor: This bull threw Kimzey off in Cowtown. He was 3-0 in Cowtown and did not look fun or easy to ride any of the time. He doesn't help the rider much, and deploys a lot of moves and tendencies that no rider really likes. However, Sage is as smart a veteran rider as there is, and he comes into this with a little more knowledge of what he needs to do here. In general if you want your bull to go unridden, you would not want someone like Sage to try him a second time.

Clay Guiton on 017 Mercy: Clay is the hottest guy going right now and has ridden 13 of his last 15 over the past month. This bull has an impressive record and dominated in Cowtown, but he's been ridden a couple of times before, and you get the feeling that if anyone can ride him, Guiton probably WILL.

John Crimber on 808 Miller Time: John is banged up, and this bull is poison to left-handed riders. He's a big ugly sucker that yanks on riders a lot and just doesn't look nice at all. If John gets a score here it will be a bigger win than most realize.

Brady Fielder on 001 Nightmare: This isn't the strongest bull in the round, but he has timing hitches that make him hard to ride for most. Nightmare's biggest weakness is riders like this. He's 5-4 against the best rider's he's faced, and 19-4 overall. Fielder has been extremely dominant this season, and he has a good chance here. This bull won't overpower him, but will try to give him chances to screw it up. Fielder probably won't take them.

Dalton Kasel on 925 Hunting Trip This is a solid short round quality bull with a long history. He's a better fit for right-handed riders, but Kasel has beaten a lot of these kind of matchups on his way to the top. Hunting Trip may have the odds a bit in his favor, but he is rideable, and riders in this position - battling for a world title - didn't get there by letting "rideable" bulls get the best of them.
